quiet news

For the week that's past, I have been

  • listening with Susanna
  • spending some time (and installing Ubuntu Linux!) with Hashem
  • photographing and webmastering for a klapi enterprise
  • wondering about Jenni
  • lying in bed, sick
  • missing Hankku a bit (a month left)
  • cross-country skiing and actually enjoying it (thanks to my aunt Marja)
  • solving the world's problems with Jussi and others
  • sinning and getting forgiven

We just finished watching the movie Bagdad Café.

Setting up DansGuardian on a single home PC running Ubuntu

Please note: there are newer howtos at ubuntu forums (howto1, howto2). These are probably more thoroughly tested than mine is. Thanks.

Dansguardian is efficient, even mostly out-of-the-box web content filtering to protect from the filth flowing on the internet. On Ubuntu Linux (which rocks), do:

A CSS framework and Loretta Lux

Content with Style: A CSS Framework. Simple, excellent. I'm doubtful about the absolutely sized columns in the examples though.

Also, Loretta Lux has some art I'd definitely like on my wall.

Web design links

Web design patterns. Looking at website/webapp requirements and building design from the ground up, on paper. This guy's on to something.

Simple, good writing about what (corporate) web Content Management Systems are about.

open dreams

Found an article about Bringing Usability to Open Source-And Vice Versa (scroll down the page a bit), and it inspired me - a lot. Just the kind of thing I would like to do for a living, or as living :).

And then something hit me that's been bugging me. A friend has a negative attitude towards open source: namely, she tends to ask open source developers: "but how are you going to get the bread into the table?". The point of open source is not against having a paid job. The point is about asking:

  • "where could I find someone whom I could help with my current interests?", instead of:
  • "where could I find someone to be interested enough in my skills to give me (more) money?"

And of course, people who have that attitude are exactly the ones that any group of Christians (any congregation) needs in order to go anywhere.

International Language Ido

Ido - improved esperanto.
A beautiful, simple language.
I'm tempted to start learning this, never really got interested in esperanto.

itseeni

törmäsin käytävällä itseeni
se oli väsynyt, katsoi maahan kulkiessaan
minun piti kysyä siltä, minne se on menossa
mutta se ei ollut tuntevinaankaan

istahdin lattialle, yksikseni
en oikein tiennyt, mitä tekisin
kukaan ei ollut minua vastassa
kun tänään heräsin sängystä

swim thou worries away

  • In durbuhuru's blog, he wrote "I haven't been dropping no eaves, sir, honest!", which turned out to be a quotation from the Lord of the rings. I was amused that the "eaves dropping" can be used in such a way. Wonder where such an expression comes from, anyway.
  • I've had three exams this week, and I may even have passed all of them! In addition, after 6 hours of deep dormancy ("horros" in Finnish),
  • I got up this morning just before seven and made it to the Pyynikki swimming centre to still get in before eight, when it's still cheaper. Swam about a kilometer. I'm a bit proud about myself. If I just could make it a habit.
    • There swimming with us was also a girl who reminded me of Dina, in that movie.

What is this?

A Christian student writing about life, faith, software etc. both in English and in Finnish. Some photos and poetry, too. Not thinking much about whether I'm being interesting or not. See also my work blog: Moodle Quiz UI

Please comment. Anything :).
